NZ players shocked by earthquake

New Zealand cricketers, in India for the ICC World Cup, react in horror to the grim news that at least 65 people had died in the Christchurch earthquake.

"Thoughts go out to the people of Chch today. Terrible thing to have happened again," New Zealand opener Martin Guptill wrote on Twitter.

The 6.3 magnitude quake hit New Zealand's second city and the death toll was likely to rise in a region still recovering from a 7.0 quake in September last year.

"The team woken early in India to news of another Christchurch earthquake. Thoughts are with everyone and hoping all are OK," New Zealand Cricket said on their Twitter account.

International Cricket Council chief executive Haroon Lorgat said that an appropriate gesture of respect will be made when New Zealand face Australia in their next game in Nagpur on Friday.

"At times like this, sport can only offer its support and its deepest sympathy to those who have lost loved ones during such a tragedy," said Lorgat.

"It's a helpless feeling but I will be discussing with the organisers of the World Cup how we can most appropriately remember those who lost their lives or have been injured and affected when the Black Caps play their next match against Australia in Nagpur on Friday.

"We have already contacted New Zealand Cricket's chief executive Dr Justin Vaughan to express our concern for him, his staff and the people of Christchurch.

"On behalf of everyone at the ICC and the World Cup we send our heartfelt condolences."

Veteran Kiwi player Scott Styris also expressed his concerns.

"Watching CNN. Amazing scenes. Some worried boys here in India. Be safe," he wrote on Twitter.

England off-spinner Graeme Swann shared the concern of his rivals.

"Shocking news for Christchurch. Fingers crossed for everyone's safety."

New Zealand media manager Ellery Tappin sought to allay concerns.

"All immediate friends and family are okay, but that doesn't detract from the fact that there have been fatalities," Tappin said.

Among the New Zealand World Cup squad, fast bowler Hamish Bennett plays for the Canterbury team in the devastated area while coach John Wright was born in the region.

The news would have also rattled Netherlands captain Peter Borren who was born in Christchurch.

New Zealand are slated to play their second World Cup game against Australia in Nagpur on Friday.

Tasmania close in on final

Tasmania are on the verge of securing a Sheffield Shield final spot after Luke Butterworth led them to a commanding position against Western Australia at the WACA Ground.

Western Australia vs Tasmania

Western Australia won the toss and elected to Bat.

The Tigers finished day two at 8-411 in their first innings, leading WA by 251.

Butterworth ripped through WA's top and middle orders on day one, claiming a career-best 6-51, and continued his brilliant form with the bat with 91 not out to leave his third Shield century and first in the competition since 2007 within reach.

Ben Hilfenhaus was also unbeaten on four.

Mark Cosgrove (86) produced a 129-run partnership with Butterworth for the sixth wicket, which saw Tasmania improve from 5-208 to a position where they'll be heavily favoured for the outright victory that will all but ensure their spot in next month's final.

The second-placed Tigers moved 14 points clear of third spot when they claimed first innings points earlier in the day and will guarantee a spot in the decider with two matches still to play if they win outright and Queensland don't take the six points from their in-progress match against South Australia.

WA's slim hopes of making the decider will also end unless they can claim an unlikely outright victory.

Cosgrove's third score above 80 from his last five Shield innings came off just 104 balls and included 13 boundaries, while he was backed up by Ed Cowan (81) and Nick Kruger (68).

Pace bowlers Ryan Duffield and Michael Hogan and part-time spinner Marcus North each have two wickets for the Warriors.

Tasmania began the day at 0-79, after they bowled WA out for 160 on day one, and Kruger and Cowan continued their good form on their way to a 137-run partnership.

But their dismissals before lunch sparked a collapse, with the Tigers losing 4-31 at one stage midway through the day.

Cosgrove and Butterworth saw the Tigers through to tea in a strong position and continued their good form after the break.

Butterworth's half-century was his first in the Shield in nearly two years but Cosgrove finally fell when he tried to hook Hogan over the fine leg boundary but miscued it.

Debutant wicketkeeper Tom Triffitt (16) then bizarrely slipped and fell back onto his stumps when taking off for a single and Xavier Doherty (14) was caught behind off North, before Hilfenhaus and Butterworth saw them through to stumps.

Brisbane chairman quits, Lockyer speaks

Brisbane Broncos chairman Darryl Somerville has resigned in protest over the shock sacking of coach Ivan Henjak.

Somerville has let it be known that while he respects the decision of board and CEO Paul White he could not personally support it.

He offered to stay on as chairman until the next Annual General Meeting on April 20 but it was agreed to accept the resignation now.

Because the Broncos are a listed company the ASX has been informed.

Meanwhile, captain Darren Lockyer denied he and teammates were to blame for coach Henjak's sacking, as it emerged new chief executive Paul White was left to do the dirty work his predecessor would not.

It has been revealed the Broncos board discussed Henjak's position last October, with four of the five directors in favour of sacking him as a result of an unfavourable player review after Brisbane missed the finals for the first time in 19 seasons.

No official vote was taken and his position was saved when chairman Darryl Somerville - one of those who originally supported his appointment when Wayne Bennett left in 2009 - threatened to resign if Henjak was dumped.

Start of sidebar. Skip to end of sidebar.

End of sidebar. Return to start of sidebar.

Then chief executive Bruno Cullen sided with his chairman and Henjak survived, and it was instead left to White to make the change 18 days out from the club's first game of the 2011 season.

Lockyer quickly moved to clear himself and his players of blame for Henjak's demise even though their end-of-season reviews last year were less than favourable.

"The players feel for Ivan but we have to all move forward in the best interest of the club and our fans," said Lockyer after the playing group was briefed on developments by White and operations manager Andrew Gee on Tuesday morning.

Lockyer denied falling out with Henjak after he rejected his plea to return from a bad rib injury to play against Canberra in a game Brisbane had to win to make the finals.

"That's not true,'' Lockyer said.

"I know there are rumours going around that I had a falling out with Ivan but that wasn't the case.

"We had a good relationship but at times last year when we were going through a pretty bad trot I think everyone was down a bit.

"Ivan and I had a good relationship and there was never a falling out."

A successful mining company executive who won premierships in central Queensland as a player and coach and was also named in the Queensland Police Team of the Century along with Bennett and Mal Meninga, White knows a bit about what it takes to be a successful team.

When he took up his post in January, White conducted his own detailed review, holding interviews with players and staff.

It was then he discovered the club had failed to act on a decision to replace Henjak in 2010.

The six time premiers have floundered with some key decisions since Bennett, who established the culture at the club, ended his 21-year reign in 2009.

He walked because he felt he had lost the support of Cullen and his control within the club.

Bennett Back To Brisbane Broncos? Wayne BennettExclusive: Broncos eye Bennett to replace HenjakYour say: Where should Bennett go next?

Ironically, Henjak's sacking, Cullen's retirement and Somerville's resignation could all be catalysts for Bennett to return to the Broncos in 2012.

Bennett is a good friend of White's from his early days in the police force and he respects Gee, one of the players he relied on heavily at club and Origin level.

South Sydney owner Russell Crowe has reportedly made a $1 million play for Bennett, but living in Sydney does not appeal to him.

The opportunity to return home to Brisbane to his family and farm and to the Broncos, a club he made the most successful in Australia, is firming sharply.

Ponting reportedly smashes TV

Australia captain Ricky Ponting smashed a television set in a fit of fury after being run out during the ICC World Cup match against Zimbabwe, a local official claimed.

The incident happened after Ponting returned to the dressing-room and saw the replay of his dismissal on TV during his team's 91-run win at the Sardar Patel stadium on Monday.

"It is true that Ponting smashed the LCD (TV) in the Australian dressing-room," Gujarat Cricket Association secretary Rajesh Patel said.

"I think he must have been frustrated at his early dismissal.

"We have informed the International Cricket Council as well as the Australian team management about the incident."

Ponting, who made 28, was found short of his crease at the non-striker's end by a direct throw from Chris Mpofu during the Group A encounter.

The Repsol Honda rider led his teammate Dani Pedrosa and reigning world champion Jorge Lorenzo of Spain after clocking two minutes 0.987 seconds on his only lap at the first day of the second pre-season MotoGP test.

Pedrosa was the second quickest with 0.373 seconds behind Stoner, while fellow Repsol Honda rider Andrea Dovizioso was in fifth place with a time of 2:01.747.

Lorenzo was third fastest on his Yamaha, with a time of 2:01.468 after he spent the day trying a modified chassis in a bid to deal with a chatter problem encountered last time out at his track.

San Carlo Honda Gresini pair Hiroshi Aoyama and Marco Simoncelli finished at the seventh and eighth places as Simoncelli, who set the best time at the previous test, worked towards better grip and braking performance.

The highest placing Ducati on day one was multiple world champion Valentino Rossi, who managed ninth on the timesheet with 1.012 seconds off Stoner.

Rossi, however, appeared to enjoy improved comfort in his shoulder compared to the previous test at Sepang three weeks ago, when he made a return after a shoulder injury.

Mapfre Aspar rider Hector Barbera and Ducati Team's Nicky Hayden both experienced crashes during the earlier half of the day and escaped uninjured, finally placing their respective Desmosedicis at the 11th and 12th place.

The riders will have a further session in Qatar ahead of the start of the new season at the emirate's Losail Circuit on March 20.

Bartel out with tonsil trouble

Geelong star Jimmy Bartel will miss the Cats' next two AFL pre-season NAB Cup games after having his tonsils removed.

The 2007 Brownlow Medallist was among the best for Geelong in their weekend wins over Western Bulldogs and North Melbourne.

But assistant coach Blake Caracella said the midfielder had been struggling for weeks with tonsillitis.

"I think you try and get over these things for a while because you get sick then it goes away and then you get sick again," Caracella said.

"Jimmy's decided now that enough's enough, so he's getting it done."

Geelong open the season against St Kilda, with those two clubs also set to meet on Saturday night in the second round of the NAB Cup competition.

Captain Cameron Ling (hamstring), Matthew Scarlett (ankle), Paul Chapman (calf) and Travis Varcoe (shoulder), who all missed the NAB Cup opening round, will again sit out Saturday night's match.

Forward James Podsiadly will also miss the game after fracturing a hand on Sunday, with Ling and Podsiadly also in doubt for the start of the home and away season.

Culina links with dad at Jets

The departure of Jason Culina to Newcastle does not make the future of Shane Smeltz at Gold Coast any clearer, says chief executive Clive Mensink.

Losing Their Cool Top melees: Sport's best of the biff+16 Hyundai Matchday Saturday Chat with Robbie & Boz on Facebook during show

Gold Coast have confirmed that Culina would be playing under his dad and Jets coach Branko Culina from next season.

The Socceroos midfielder still had another season remaining on his United contract but had been given permission to speak with other clubs.

The loss of their foundation marquee man was expected to free up some cash for the off-contract Smeltz, who had also been linked to the Jets.

End of sidebar. Return to start of sidebar.

However, Mensink said nothing could be read into Culina's departure.

"Retaining Smeltz and Jason leaving are two separate issues," he said.

"We have all got to work under a salary cap.

"The decision with Shane will be made at the end of the season."

Smeltz has postponed contract talks until the end of the season - a deadline that has been extended following Gold Coast's finals run.

They are two wins away from a grand final berth after booking a showdown with Adelaide United at Hindmarsh Stadium on Sunday following last weekend's 1-0 win over two-time champions Melbourne Victory.

The finals series has been billed as an end of an era for the Gold Coast squad due to the looming player exodus.

Dino Djulbic, Steve Pantelidis, Zenon Caravella, Bas van den Brink and now Culina are all confirmed exits, with speculation swirling around Smeltz.

Culina, 30, had been sidelined since undergoing knee surgery after breaking down during Australia's Asian Cup campaign last month.

But Culina had kept the door open for a last ditch finals tilt as he fast-tracked his recovery.

As much as Mensink wanted Culina to run out for Gold Coast again before linking with the Jets, he hoped he didn't see the Socceroo in Gold Coast colours again this season.

"We are unsure but for the benefit of Jason's future it is probably better that he doesn't try and come back (for United)," he said.

"Personally I would rather see him rehab properly and not try and put too much pressure on coming back too soon because obviously that can be detrimental to his playing future.

"We wish him well. He has obviously been a great ambassador for the club - as our foundation marquee player and captain he has served us graciously."

Mensink did not think Culina's defection would disrupt United's finals tilt.

"Jason addressed the players today and they are comfortable with his decision," he said.

"Jason had sat down with us in the past and we agreed that he could speak to other parties, and then a decision was made.

"We just wish him all the best.

"Now we are concentrating on this weekend against Adelaide."

United aren't lacking depth despite the threat of more departures.

Their national youth league team won the championship for the second straight year this season, ensuring a steady production line of talent.

JT named for Cowboys trial

In an odd twist, Johnathan Thurston may yet captain North Queensland in their NRL pre-season trial against Gold Coast Titans in Cairns on Saturday night - despite his fate as Cowboys skipper hanging in the balance.

The classy halfback was on Tuesday named in a strong Cowboys side to tackle the Titans as speculation swirled over his future as leader.

The Cowboys have maintained that a final verdict on Thurston will not be made until just before the official season kick-off against the Broncos at Suncorp Stadium on March 11.

A player leadership group featuring Matt Scott, Brent Tate, Dallas Johnson and Aaron Payne are believed to have a major say on whether Thurston should remain as skipper in 2011.

Adding to the intrigue, Payne stood in for Thurston in the Cowboys' 26-4 trial loss to the Broncos in Alice Springs last weekend.

Curiously there was no captain named for the trial clash against the Titans - but Cowboys football manager Peter Parr said nothing should be read into that.

Start of sidebar. Skip to end of sidebar.

End of sidebar. Return to start of sidebar.

"It is the same thing that I have been saying since the end of last season - we will be making a decision on the captain before the commencement of the season," he said.

"And once the club has decided on who will captain the club for 2011 we will let everyone know."

But Thurston may yet captain the Cowboys trial side in far north Queensland this weekend.

"That would be a question for the coach (Neil Henry) and he will probably make up his mind this weekend - we have a number of players there who are capable of doing that," Parr said.

The season kick-off may be in little more than two weeks' time but Parr said the Cowboys were in no hurry to make a decision on whether Thurston retained the captaincy.

"We will do it internally like we have always done," he said.

"Johnathan is comfortable with the process like he always has been.

"We have our own internal process about how we will go about making our decision.

"That process hasn't changed over a number of years and everybody within the club is comfortable with the process."

Thurston has endured intense scrutiny over his future as skipper after being arrested on a public nuisance charge in Brisbane in September.

It added another chapter to Thurston's colourful history at the Cowboys.

The Test and Queensland Origin No.7 had also been charged with public drunkenness after being arrested outside his Townsville apartment semi-naked in January 2008.

While tongues continue to wag over Thurston's future, Parr said the club had not been distracted by the speculation over their playmaker's future.

"The speculation comes externally, internally we are comfortable with the process," he said.

Manou holds the key for SA

On the cricket field, South Australia wicketkeeper Graham Manou always shows plenty of heart. The trouble is he has a hole in his own heart.

South Australia vs Queensland

Stumps

SHEF - Adelaide Oval21 February 2011 - Day 2, Session 3South Australia 1st Innings

Queensland won the toss and elected to Bat.

South AustraliaSouth Australia7/275 QueenslandQueensland347 BatsmenRunsBalls4s6sSRG. Manou801646048.78N. Lyon023000

The longstanding health issue, diagnosed when he was 11, threatened to derail his innings on day two of the Sheffield Shield match against Queensland at Adelaide Oval.

Manou had a crushing feeling in his chest during his time behind the stumps on Monday and then battled with the aftermath of his heart issues on Tuesday as he compiled an unbeaten 80 to put the Redbacks in reach of first innings points.

"It was a bit of a different feeling to what I'm used to having. It worried me a little bit," Manou said.

"Normally when I get my episodes it feels like my heart is coming out of the chest but this time it felt like my chest was caving in and someone was squeezing my heart."

With three first innings wickets intact going into day three, South Australia will be looking to the 31-year-old to steer his side past the Bulls total in a match it must win to climb from the bottom of the shield table.

Start of sidebar. Skip to end of sidebar.

End of sidebar. Return to start of sidebar.

At stumps on day SA was 7-275, still needing another 72 runs to match Queensland's first innings knock of 347.

Manou will be looking for his seven first-class century when he resumes and was well aware the responsibility was firmly his.

"In any game of cricket someone in the top six needs to go on and make those starts into a hundred and tomorrow I've got the opportunity to do that," he said.

Ironically, it could be former South Australia star Darren Lehmann who might bring the Redbacks undone.

Manou said the Bulls were already showing the influence of the former SA skipper who has taken on a coaching role with Queensland.

"I think he has just relayed all the experience he has in playing here," he said.

"In the past Queensland have been a little bit guilty of sticking to the Queensland bowling lines.

"What they've done is they've come more to an Adelaide Oval wicket in their areas and lengths.

"It was quite obvious to me out there that those little things had come from Darren."

Earlier in the day Aiden Blizzard hit a neat 64, James Smith made 37 and Cameron Borgas 29 to be among several SA players to squander solid starts.

Queensland's attack shared the spoils with Cameron Boyce taking 2-52, Luke Feldman 2-56, Michael Neser 2-27 and James Hopes 1-63.

Titans flog Souths 42-4

South Sydney coach John Lang has a major headache ahead of the Rabbitohs' opening match of the NRL season after a 42-4 flogging by Gold Coast Titans on Saturday night.

Already missing star signing Greg Inglis and with fellow internationals Sam Burgess, Isaac Luke and Michael Crocker under injury clouds as well, Lang's worries were heightened with a further injury to backrower Ben Lowe during the trial match in Coffs Harbour on the NSW north coast.

Even accounting for the absence of his stars Lang would also be holding serious doubts over his attacking options as the tried and tested halves combination of Chris Sandow and John Sutton was virtually impotent against the Titans.

Gold Coast coach John Cartwright has no such worries.

In his first match at five-eighth for the Titans since Mat Rogers retired, Greg Bird overcame a shaky start to work into some form, culminating in a try in the 69th minute.

Gold Coast dominated early but were unable to convert opportunities, leading only 8-0 at half time.

But the introduction of Preston Campbell after the main break caused the spark for Gold Coast as he scored two of their six second-half tries.

"He (Preston Campbell) has to be there, he just bobs up in the right place all of the time," said Cartwright.

"It's no coincidence that as soon as he got out there he made two breaks and scored a couple of tries.
"He just has that natural know how of where to be."

"We had a lot more numbers than Souths and they got a bit tired towards the end of the game but we stuck to it and I think it turned out good."

Lang took nothing positive from the performance of his men.

"We were flat as tacks, terrible," he said.

"I thought we had a bit of energy last week but we had no energy at all tonight.

"Our halves struggled, our forwards struggled, everybody struggled.

"I reckon there might have been three blokes who looked good at times but we were terrible.

"I can't believe they're unfit with all of the training they've done.

"You lack a certain amount of match fitness but we were just flat for whatever reason."

Major semi-final, leg one:

Sunday, February 20
Elimination final:

Gold Coast United v Melbourne Victory, Skilled Park, 5.30pm (EDT)

(Elimination final winners meet in minor semi-final during week two. Losers are eliminated.)

Second half strikes to Kosta Barbarouses and Matt McKay extended the premiers' unbeaten streak to 26 matches and put them on course the convert their domination of the season into a championship.

The Mariners now head into next Saturday's second leg at Suncorp Stadium facing a momentous task, having to beat the Roar by more than two goals at a venue where Brisbane have not lost a match since January 16, 2010.

The winner of the tie will host the grand final on March 12 while the loser must face off against either Adelaide, Gold Coast or Melbourne Victory in the preliminary final a week earlier.

The Roar were clinical in their finishing but the Mariners were made to pay for not taking their chances, striking the post three times in front of a disappointing finals crowd of 10,166.

The contest had been fairly even before the Mariners gave away possession cheaply in the 52nd minute, allowing McKay to intercept a hospital ball from Daniel McBreen to John Hutchinson and feed the ball to Barbarouses.

The striker still had plenty to do but shrugged off challenges from Alex Wilkinson and Patrick Zwaanswijk before slotting the ball past Mathew Ryan for his 12th goal of the campaign.

The Mariners pushed hard for an equaliser and found it in the 64th minute when they were denied by the post twice in a matter of seconds.

Patricio Perez collected a misplaced ball from Thomas Broich and played in McBreen, but the striker fired a shot into the right upright before Matt Simon also hit the post with a follow-up effort.

The Roar, who have never lost a match at Bluetongue Stadium, twisted the knife when they added a valuable second away goal in the 73rd minute through Socceroos star McKay.

The midfielder played a neat one-two with Barbarouses and was left alarmingly unmarked to flick a clever header over Ryan's head.

Neither side had been able to make a breakthrough in an entertaining first half.

Barbarouses almost gave the Roar the lead in the 22nd minute but hit a shot wide on the back of a beautiful phase of passing from the Roar.

Central Coast's best chance of the half came when McGlinchey surged into the box with a sublime run, beating off Stefanutto and Matt Smith before his deflected shot cannoned off the post.

Oliver Bozanic was on hand for the rebound but his shot was also deflected and went out for a corner.

Ange Postecoglou was proud of the Roar, saying they did the job despite not being at their brilliant best.

"It was always going to be a tough game," Postecoglou said.

"It's a finals game and they were at home so, we knew there were stages in the game we were going to have to battle and work hard, that's finals football.

"We did what we had to do, scored two quality goals and in the end got the job done."

The coach played down any fears his side could become complacent heading into the second leg with a comfortable lead.

"It's halftime, that's the way we're treating it," Postecoglou said.

"We're in a good position that's for sure. From our point of view its about continuing what we've been doing and finishing off the tie."

Mariners coach Arnold admitted his side paid for not taking their chances, but vowed to "go for it" in the return leg.

"It was a game of chances, we had more chances in the first half than they did and in big games like that, you've got to convert them," Arnold said.

"... The benefit of finishing second is we've got a double bite at the cherry and we can just go for it.

"Obviously Brisbane at home are a very tough team, but if not we've got another game the week after."

Watson aware of key role

Australia all-rounder Shane Watson said he had "big shoes to fill" but vowed to do his best to get his team off to flying starts in their quest for a fourth successive ICC Cricket World Cup.

Watson, who opens the innings for the defending champions, excelled in the limited time he had at the crease at the 2007 World Cup, when big-hitting pair Matthew Hayden and Adam Gilchrist opened the batting.

"It is a much bigger responsibility opening the innings and trying to lay a great platform for the team, like Hayden and Gilchrist did, especially in World Cups," said Watson, who batted lower down the order in the Caribbean.

"They are big shoes to fill because they have always performed well."

Watson, 29, emerged as the key opener after the retirements of Hayden and Gilchrist, hammering back-to-back centuries against England and New Zealand to help his side win the 2009 Champions Trophy in South Africa.

He was also in top form during Australia's recent one-day series win over England at home, scoring 306 runs with one hundred and two half-centuries.

Watson is expected to play a major role in Australia's World Cup campaign not only as an hard-hitting opener, but also as a disciplined seamer.

"I know it is a big responsibility. It is a great challenge," said Watson, who has scored 3,353 runs with five centuries and taken 127 wickets in 123 one-day internationals.

"I now have a lot more role (playing a long innings and then coming to bowl perhaps 10 overs) within the team. It will be good to play that role for team."

Watson said he was confident of delivering as an all-rounder, especially after having given a good account of himself against England.

"Even in the World Twenty20, I'd had an important role to play with the ball. I come behind bowlers who have a good bit of pace and my job is to keep the scoring rate down and pick up a few wickets as well," he said.

"I definitely have more of a role within the team and during the last few months I have been in a good place as a bowler, especially in the one-day series against England and I hope to continue that."

Australia lost both of their warm-up matches against India and South Africa but Watson said he was not fretting about those results.

"Hopefully, not too much should be read into them. They were practice matches and we were trying to find the right balance," said Watson, who rated India, South Africa and Sri Lanka as the danger sides.

"Everyone is jumping out of their skins because it is not too often you get an opportunity to play in a World Cup. The team that deals with pressure better will be the winners," he said.

Australia, who have not lost a match in the past two World Cups under Ricky Ponting, open their campaign against Zimbabwe in Ahmedabad on Monday.

They have lost just one of their 27 one-dayers against the African side.

Sehwag smacks 175

Virender Sehwag blasted a career-best 175 to power India to 4-370 after they were asked to bat by Bangladesh in the opening match of the ICC Cricket World Cup.

Bangladesh vs India

A sell-out crowd of 25,000 at the Sher-e-Bangla stadium watched in stunned silence as Sehwag lashed 14 boundaries and five sixes in a 140-ball stay for his 14th one-day century.

Young Virat Kohli chipped in with 100 not out to leave the Tigers with a daunting target of 7.5 runs an over in the first World Cup game between the two sides since Bangladesh upset India in the previous edition in 2007.

Sehwag narrowly missed his pre-tournament aim to bat out the full 50 overs, just as his teammate Sachin Tendulkar had done in 2010 while scoring the first-ever 200 in one-day cricket.

He was bowled by Bangladesh captain Shakib Al Hasan in the 48th over soon after equalling former India skipper Kapil Dev's score of 175 against Zimbabwe during the Cup-winning campaign in 1983.

Sehwag hit the first ball of the tournament for four, rocking on the backfoot to punch Shafiul Islam to the cover fence, before reaching his half-century with a six.

Sehwag and Tendulkar hammered 69 for the first wicket by the 11th over when Bangladesh broke through with a stroke of luck.

Tendulkar drove a ball to mid-on and charged down the wicket, but found no response from the other end to leave both batsmen at the non-striker's end.

Shakib's direct throw to the wicketkeeper ended the world batting record holder's innings of 28.

Gautam Gambhir continued the run spree by adding 83 for the second wicket with Sehwag before he was bowled off Mohammad Mahmudullah's second delivery for 39.

Sehwag had scored half the team runs when he reached his first one-day century against Bangladesh in the 32nd over, adjusting his strokeplay on a wicket where the ball came slowly off the deck.

Kohli took over after Sehwag suffered a leg injury and called for a runner in the 38th over, stroking eight boundaries and two sixes during a third-wicket stand of 203 with his Delhi captain.

Hodges entered the game in the 22nd minute as he made his long awaited return to action following an ankle injury which sidelined him for all of last season.

He pushed off three defenders to put Jordan Kahu over, as the Broncos entered halftime with a 14-0 advantage.

Josh Hoffman scored the Broncos' opening try in the 13th minute, with Corey Parker converting.

A 50-metre break from Hoffman set up the second try to winger Jack Reed.

In a historic night at Blacktown Olympic Park, the Suns upset Sydney by three points in their first match in the pre-season cup before they knocked off Greater Western Sydney 0.8.4 (52) to 0.4.3 (27) to ensure a surprise spot in the quarter-finals.

The Swans had opened the night with a crushing 79-point victory over a goal-less GWS, but the Giants showed far more spirit in their second match, 12 months out from their AFL debut.

The Suns play their first game in the season proper against Carlton on April 3, and with the likes of Gary Ablett and Nathan Bock still to come in, they could prove a handful in 2011.

Without Ablett and marquee Giant recruit Israel Folau, the spotlight was on Hunt.

Starting at fullback and still carrying more bulk than a typical AFL defender, the former rugby league international showed reasonable aerobic capacity, albeit in games played over two 20-minute halves.

He had a steadying hand in the young Gold Coast backline, directing traffic and marshalling troops in an encouraging performance, finishing the game against Sydney with six disposals and three marks.

Hunt, who also had a brief stint in French rugby, then had a similar involvement in the second match and Swans coach John Longmire felt Hunt had shown glimpses of talent.

"I was probably more looking at our boys and seeing what they do, so I didn't notice him a lot because I wasn't looking for him to be honest," Longmire said.

"But the times I saw him he did okay a few times."

He also wasn't surprised by the competitiveness of the Suns, saying they've got some "fantastic talent".

David Swallow and Brandon Matera impressed for the Suns, while fellow youngsters Dylan Shiel and Jeremy Cameron showed good signs for GWS.

The AFL would consider the evening a success, with a full-house of 9447 people showing decent support for the Giants.

Brumbies off to winning start

A late try ensured the Brumbies started their 2011 Super Rugby season positively with a 28-20 win against the Chiefs on Saturday.

Replacement prop Salesi Ma'afu crossed in the last 10 minutes with captain Matt Giteau converting to place the home side out of reach of their New Zealand opponents at Canberra Stadium.

Giteau, the man of the match, kept the scoreboard ticking over with three penalties and two conversions for 13 points while directing the Brumbies' backline.

The five-eighth scored two penalties in the first 10 minutes, with the second coming after referee Jonathan Kaplan sent Chiefs prop Nathan White to the sin bin for repeated infringements at the breakdown by the visitors.

Shortly after centre Robbie Coleman took advantage of the extra man to score his side's first try of the Super Rugby season.

The 20-year-old collected the ball 35 metres out, sliding past two Chiefs players before a right step wrong-footed All Black fullback Mils Muliaina and enable him to score under the posts.

Fortune favoured the home side in the opening stages as the Chiefs bombed three tries in three minutes, including one with captain Muliaina dropping an pass with the tryline begging.

Francis Fainifo made the Chiefs pay for their profligacy, scoring in the left corner after Stephen Moore and Mitchell Chapman created an overlap for the 21-year-old to cross untouched.

With four minutes left of the first half, the Brumbies were offside at the tackle and Stephen Donald kicked the penalty for the Chiefs to cut the host's lead to 18-3 at the break

But a comeback by the Chiefs started in the 52nd minute, with winger Sitiveni Sivivatu scoring in the left corner after four passes, followed by a try to replacement halfback Tawera Kerr-Barlow.

Lelia Masaga scored a consolation try for the Chiefs after the final siren.

Brumbies coach Andy Friend said his men started the match with the required intensity but lost their way in the early part of the second half.

"I thought our first 20 minutes were pretty sharp," Friend said.

"We seemed to drop away a bit there when the game got a bit scrappy where we seemed to lose our legs a tad."

"...When we came out we did not keep that same intensity that we started the first half with."

Friend was impressed wih the effort to hold the comeback by the Chiefs.

"What I was pleased with was how they fought back and obviously finish on top."

Captain Matt Giteau said the team showed character as the flow of the game changed.

"Your first game, things aren't going to click," Giteau said.

"We probably played 20 minutes of good rugby and still managed to get the win.

"That showed the attitude was right and that is all you can ask for in round one."

His coach said Giteau had a great game.

"That was Giteau back to his best," Friend said.

"We now just need to get people running off him because he has that magic little offload.

"If we can get runners working off that, we will make more linebreaks."

In an absorbing contest, both sides defended exceptionally well, but Melbourne dominated the attacking aspect of the match.

Chase Stanley led the way with two tries as the Storm ran away with victory after a slow start.

Stanley was well supported by Englishman Gareth Widdop who showed a promising kicking game at half-back.

For the Raiders, their forwards battled manfully, particularly props Brett White and Dave Shillington.

The teams were far from full strength with Billy Slater, Cameron Smith, Cooper Cronk and Bryan Norrie out for the Storm while the Raiders missed fullback Josh Dugan, Alan Tongue, Matt Orford and Tom Learoyd-Lahrs.

More than 6000 rugby league enthusiasts watched the game, which was played on a slippery surface after recent rainfall.

The conditions may have explained the number of handling errors from the players, with the Raiders guilty on numerous occasions.

After a scoreless opening 30 minutes, the Storm was sparked by Stanley's double before Daniel Vidot dived over in the corner for Canberra's first try.

With the game turning into an arm-wrestle, Melbourne were able to apply the decisive blow when prop Atelea Vea scored.

Replacement Tu'u Maori managed a late try to round out the 20-point victory.

On a hot and humid night in Sydney's south-west, where the mercury nudged 38 degrees pitchside, Tigers coach Tim Sheens and his opposite number Stephen Kearney started the game with virtually full-strength teams, in front of a crowd of 12,761.

Players from both sides were enjoying their first hit-outs of the season, but it was Kearney's men who looked the sharper as they raced out of the blocks.

Eels coach Kearney said he was satisfied with the performance but said he was more interested in not picking up any injuries and improving fitness than the result.

"It was an improvement on last week and on a couple of areas we identified last week that we felt we needed to improve on," Kearney said.

"I thought we did alright tonight, we were better with the footy tonight, and a lot more composed, which helped us.

Start of sidebar. Skip to end of sidebar.

End of sidebar. Return to start of sidebar.

"The conditions tested our fitness tonight, we didn't come away with anything more than bumps and bruises, but I thought overall it was good hit-out."

The Eels, who flopped massively in 2010, missing the finals despite starting the season as premiership favourites, scored three tries in the opening 20 minutes to leave the Tigers shellshocked.

Jeff Robson broke the deadlock in the sixth minute after Benji Marshall deflected Daniel Mortimer's teasing kick into his path, with Casey McGuire doubling the lead five minutes later, diving over from dummy-half.

Former Brisbane and Queensland utility McGuire, who joined the Eels in the off-season after a four-year stint with Super League club Catalans Dragons, impressed from hooker, and could prove to be an astute acquisition.

The 31-year-old was at the heart of everything for the Eels, and his electric 50-metre run almost set up Jarryd Hayne, who was stopped just short of the line by a mass of white shirts.

However, that let-off was short-lived as Justin Horo added a third four-pointer, darting onto a Robson grubber-kick to score.

Hayne piled on the misery for the Sheens' side 10 minutes before the break, showing superb footwork to leave Marshall and Andrew Fifita for dead and dancing his way to the line.

Tigers winger Lote Tuqiri stopped the rot with a try in the left corner three minutes before the break, only for the Eels to grab their fifth try thanks to some brilliance from skipper Nathan Hindmarsh on the stroke of halftime.

The old warhorse raced 85-metres after picking off a Robert Lui pass, but just as his 31-year-old legs were giving way underneath him, he offloaded for Horo to grab his second try, with Luke Burt converting his fifth goal of the game.

Both sides made several changes throughout the second half, as the pace of the game slowed, with the conditions taking their toll on the players.

Tuqiri bulldozed his way over 10 minutes after the restart, with Marshall adding the extras, but it proved to be the last score of the match, as the Eels ran out comfortable winners.

Tigers skipper Robbie Farah said the was unconcerned about the result and played down Parra's performance.

"We didn't start well, but I am not going to start saying Parra or any other team are going to win the comp, they beat us in a trial,"he said.

The Tigers will take on Sydney Roosters in their final trial match next Saturday, with Parramatta meeting Penrith.

O'Connor thrust into five-eighth

Wallabies wildcard James O'Connor has been thrust into five-eighth for Western Force's opening-round Super Rugby clash with Queensland

Super Rugby Week One Super Rugby preview with Greg ClarkFox Sports rugby guru looks at the weekend's matches

Former Hurricanes playmaker Ripia had been pencilled in to wear the No.10 jersey in the Super Rugby opener but was scratched due to a foot injury he sustained in a trial against the Australian Barbarians.

"At this stage it hasn't responded to treatment," coach Richard Graham said.

"We're being conservative in our management of Willie given that the season runs through to July.

"Coincidentally a group of leading foot specialists were in Perth for a conference this week and we were able to chat to them about it and will continue to manage it as instructed."

Ripia's injury blow puts utility back O'Connor, 20, into a head-to-head playmaking duel with close friend and Wallabies teammate Cooper on Sunday at Suncorp Stadium, and sees Cameron Shepherd move to fullback.

"I'm very comfortable with James moving into that role," said Graham.

"He played in that position a number of times last season and more recently in the trial matches so were confident he'll do a good job for us."

Force skipper Nathan Sharpe was named in the second-row as expected despite undergoing surgery just four weeks ago to repair a hernia.

Test No.8 Ben McCalman has beaten Sam Wykes to the other lock spot, allowing Graham to play his menacing back-row combination of David Pocock, Richard Brown and Matt Hodgson.

Liverpool held by Sparta in Europe

Kenny Dalglish extended his unbeaten streak as Liverpool manager as the Reds were held to a goalless draw at Sparta Prague in their Europa League last-32 first-leg clash.

But the game gave him few reasons to smile before Liverpool face Sparta at Anfield on February 24 for the second-leg match, with the Scot admitting that he would be looking towards a far more offensive-minded performance.

A lacklustre first half offered few scoring chances and most of them for Sparta, who are presently second in the Czech championship which will resume after a winter break on the last weekend of February.

Sparta's Croatian winger Manuel Pamic sent his shot from inside the box over the bar, and ex-Reading midfielder Marek Matejovsky's swerving shot from 10 metres was blocked by Greek defender Sotiris Kyrgiakos's face.

Dalglish, a former Liverpool striker, replaced Fabio Aurelio, who injured his groin, with Joe Cole 37 minutes into the game.

Within a minute, Cole set up Ngog whose shot from close range was blocked by the Sparta defence led by ex-West Ham United skipper, 37-year-old hardman Tomas Repka.

Just before half-time, Dirk Kuyt slipped three metres from the Sparta goal and narrowly missed a ball headed into the box.

End of sidebar. Return to start of sidebar.

In the second half, Sparta's Cameroon striker Leonard Kweuke headed just wide before sending in a low shot at Pepe Reina's goal from 10 metres which had the Spain goalkeeper scrambling to save.

Before the end Matejovsky and another Sparta midfielder Kamil Vacek shot wide from long range.

Dalglish, who in January took over as caretaker manager until the end of the season for a second time after a previous spell in 1985-1991, started with David Ngog as the only striker.

The game was Dalglish's first in a European competition as Liverpool manager as the Reds were banned from European cups throughout his first term.

The ban followed the 1985 Heysel Stadium disaster that left 39 people dead in the wake of rioting ahead of the European Cup final between Liverpool and Juventus.

The Reds, though, were missing the injured trio of Andy Carroll (thigh), Steven Gerrard (groin) and Daniel Agger (adductor).

Ajax, the winner of Europe's second-tier competition in 1992, thrashed Anderlecht 3-0 with goals by Toby Alderweireld, Christian Eriksen and Mounir El Hamdaoui.

Czech striker Tomas Necid scored the winner for 2005 champion CSKA Moscow in a 1-0 victory at PAOK Salonika, and FC Porto beat Sevilla 2-1 thanks to Fredy Guarin's late strike.

Fantasy Cricket World Cup: Ultimate XI

The stars have aligned, not just on the sub-continent but also in Fox Sports Fantasy Cricket World Cup.

The Ultimate XI reads like a who's who of ODI royalty and though any attempts to assemble this all-star line-up yourself will quite literally break the bank there's no harm in dreaming.

So before you lock in your squad for the opening round of matches, cast your eye over the players your Fantasy rivals will be carrying and make sure you don't miss out on any first-round must-haves.

Batsmen

Sachin Tendulkar Sachin Tendulkar Tendulkar ... little but mighty.Source: AFP

Jonathan Trott (England, 8.0, selected in 48 per cent of teams)
It’s a case of go with what you know, and all Australian’s know is the sight of Jonathan Trott unloading with the bat all summer long. This will be Trott’s maiden World Cup but he goes in with an outstanding OD average of 53.62 and three tons, two of which came in the last month. England’s form has been below par in the shortened form of the game but Trott’s form has never waivered.

Sachin Tendulkar (India, 10.0, selected in 29 per cent of teams)
It seems incomprehensible that we’re talking about Sachin Tendulkar competing in his sixth World Cup, let alone doing so at the top of his game and as the tournament’s absolute Fantasy must-have. The most prolific World Cup batsman in history, Tendulkar averages 57.93 with four centuries and 13 half-tons in the tournament, while his 1929 ODI boundaries is an all-time record.

Michael Clarke (Australia, 7.5, selected in 23 per cent of teams)
So much for being the least popular figure in Australian cricket, Michael Clarke hits one innings of 73 against South Africa and Fantasy owners draft him in droves. Maybe it’s his World Cup batting average of 87.20, albeit across just the one tournament in 2007. His ODI average is a still respectable 43.58 and while his form is up and down of late it is worth noting his last century came in India in November.

Hurry! Time is running out to get your Fantasy Cricket World Cup XI selected ahead of the opening matches.

Chris Gayle (West Indies, 10.0, selected in 22 per cent of teams)
A World Cup average of 28.93 and an ODI average of 39 cloud what we know about Chris Gayle. Likewise a Cup strike rate of 76.54 is underwhelming. In this case, forget the numbers and just think back to the Twenty20 fury he unleashed on his summer down under. Gayle has blasted 19 ODI centuries in his career, eight of which have been in Asia and six of those in India.

All-rounders

Shane Watson Shane Watson Watson ... man most selected.Source: AFP

Shane Watson (Australia, 10.0, selected in 65 per cent of teams)
No surprise who the most popular Fantasy Cricket World Cup prospect is, with owners looking to cash in on an all-round cricketer at the peak of his powers. He’s only been dismissed once in six World Cup innings and Australia’s most recent series against England saw Watson notch his high score of 161 not out. Still a big factor with the ball, Watson is complimented by a ODI bowling average of 28.08.

Shahid Afridi (Pakistan, 9.0, selected in 23 per cent of teams)
Never the most consistent performer, Shahid Afridi is a true all-rounder given his sublime skills with the bat, ball and in the field. While Afridi’s highest score in ODIs is 124, his total runs scored in three World Cups is 125. With two of his six ODI tons coming in the last year he could be ready to perform at a World Cup. He’s also hit more ODI sixes than any other player.

Wicketkeeper

Kumar Sangakkara Kumar Sangakkara Sangakkara ... Mr Nice Guy.Source: AP

Kumar Sangakkara (Sri Lanka, 9.5, selected in 22 per cent of teams)
A hot tip to top the table as leading run scorer and perhaps lead Sri Lanka all the way to the final, Kumar Sangakkara is coming off a near-perfect year of ODI cricket. Sangakkara has notched eight half-centuries since the start of 2010 and 59 in total with 10 tons along the way. He’ll lead his country from behind the pegs with catches and stumpings adding to his Fantasy value.

Bowlers

Brett Lee (Australia, 8.0, selected in 37 per cent of teams)
Fantasy owners have been won over by Brett Lee’s revival, aided by 11 in wickets in the series against England. Returning to the World Cup for the first time since 2003, it’s a stage the Aussie quick is fond of with his already impressive ODI bowling  average of 23.04 improving to 17.90 in the Cup. In terms of bonus points, don’t forget Lee has nine ODI five-wicket hauls, the third-most in history.

Dale Steyn (9.0, South Africa, selected in 28 per cent of teams)
He’ll probably split the early wickets with strike partner Morne Morkel but Dale Steyn remains the focus of the South Africa attack and one of the quickest bowlers on the planet.  Steyn’s ODI average is a respectable 29.65 but in matches where South Africa bowl second, that average drops to 24.72 as opposed to over 40 in the first innings. He’s also yet to bag a five-wicket haul. Yet.

Graeme Swann (8.0, England, selected in 25 per cent of teams)
The game’s top-ranked spinner, Graeme Swann is the only slow bowler to crack the ultimate XI. A high-energy bowler very familiar to Australian Fantasy owners, Swann boasts an impressive ODI average of 24.63 and a memorable best bowling of 5-28 that came against the Aussies. He’s unproven at the World Cup, making his first visit, but could work a treat on subcontinent pitches.

Brett Lee Brett Lee Lee ... thumbs up.Source: AFP

Lasith Malinga (8.0, Sri Lanka, selected in 22 per cent of teams)
Malinga the slinger and his Fantasy owners alike would have great memories of the 2007 World Cup. The Sri Lanka quick took 18 wickets at an average of 15.77 including four wickets in four balls against South Africa. And he did all that with an ankle injury. His change of pace and lethal yorker combined with that crazy round-arm action make Malinga totally unpredictable for batsmen but pretty reliable.

12th man

Virender Sehwag (India, 10.0, selected in 22 per cent of teams)
His only World Cup century to date came against Bermuda in 2007 but Virender Sehwag’s Test reputation combined with India’s favouritism at home is enough to sway Fantasy owners into giving him another shot. What Sehwag does possess is an impressive ODI strike rate of 103.27 and recent knocks of 110 and 99 not out against New Zealand and Sri Lanka respectively, though that was back in August.

Who are you sure-fire superstars for the Fantasy Cricket World Cup campaign?

Reds ready to rise above Phoenix

Adelaide United captain Travis Dodd is convinced the speed and creativity of his team?s attack will prove too much for Wellington Phoenix on Friday night.

A-League Award Season Sergio Van DijkVote for your A-League player of the season! A-League Finals: Week One

(Elimination final winners meet in minor semi-final during week two. Losers are eliminated.)

The final will be the second time in two weeks the teams have met at Hindmarsh Stadium, after Wellington scored a 1-0 win on February 5.

If Adelaide win they will also host the elimination final, perhaps against arch-rivals Melbourne Victory, in the second week of the finals series.

But before they start looking beyond Wellington, Adelaide will have to consider Phoenix’s considerable attacking arsenal. Striker Paul Ifill will make his return from a serious ankle injury and he will join the in-form Dylan Macallister and Chris Greenacre in a formidable frontline.

Dodd, however, has an eye on two less-familiar names - Marco Rojas and Tim Brown.

"They are a good side, there’s no doubt about it," said Dodd.

"They have some threatening players. Marco Rajos has been in great form over the last few weeks and he’s certainly going into this game with a lot of form.

"Tim Brown always makes runs from deep in the midfield, pops up in the box and scores a lot of goals. You can’t single out two players, though, they are a good rounded squad and we need to worry about playing good football."

Although they will have to overcome the tumult of Paul Reid's walkout on Thursday, Adelaide’s recent success in front of goal has Dodd confident they can secure the club’s first A-League championship.

"Set pieces are certainly something we’ve been working on since the start of the year, and we have scored quite a few goals from them. They are working for us," said Dodd.

And the captain himself is finding some neat touch in front of goal.

"Scoring the goal off a header (the winning goal against Melbourne Victory) - that’s a rare one, I guess, for me. But it was good personally to keep that confidence going into the finals."

After a stream of disappointing results in the middle of the season, Adelaide regrouped and are now playing composed and creative football.

"The players up the pitch are confident that the guys at the back can do the job and keep a clean sheet," said Dodd.

"And the defenders are confident in the attack, that we can get the ball and create opportunities. I don’t think that’s been a problem for us all year, we’ve made plenty of opportunities.

"Sure we’ve had games where we haven’t had the best finishing, but we’ve got players like Sergio (van Dijk) who’s scored 16 goals for the year, and Mathew Leckie has pace to burn. So we’re definitely a strong attacking team.

"Everything counts, every little thing counts in the finals, and hopefully it all works out to our advantage."

Will Australia win the World Cup?

Will Australia make it four in a row and win the 2011 ICC World Cup on the sub-continent? There are good reasons to think they will - and several to suggest they won't.

Cricket World Cup Winners Which team will win the 2011 ICC Cricket World Cup?Australia Bangladesh Canada England India Ireland Kenya Netherlands New Zealand Pakistan South Africa Sri Lanka West Indies Zimbabwe

We've teamed up with Fox Sports Stats to come up with five reasons why it will happen - and five reasons why it won't - and want you to have your say at the bottom of the page.

FIVE REASONS WHY AUSTRALIA WILL WIN THE 2011 WORLD CUP

Been there, done that
Only eight players at the 2011 World Cup have been part of a successful Cup campaign before and all but one of them are Australian. Skipper Ricky Ponting knows exactly what it takes to win a World Cup and his experience under pressure will be invaluable. He may not have the cattle at his disposal this time around, but Australia's unbeaten run in 2007 will work in their favour.

Get it India
Contrary to popular belief, Australia has a great one-day international record on the sub-continent. In 22 matches there since 2006 the Aussies have won 15 and lost just six, including 12 wins in India. Their capitulation in the opening warm-up matches is a worrying sign on the eve of the tournament, but the stats don't lie.

Form guide
While we're led to believe it's all doom and gloom in Australian cricket at the moment, Australia's ODI form is as good as anyone's in the world. They have lost just nine of their past 32 one-day internationals for an impressive winning percentage of almost 69%. When they won the Cup four years ago, they had a winning percentage of just 64% in the 12 months before the tournament. It's also important to remember that Australia are still the No.1-ranked side in the world.

Punter's track record - and pride
Some say he's over the hill, some say he's out of form and some say he shouldn't even be there. But of all the captain at the World Cup, Ricky Ponting's ODI win-loss record on the sub-continent is better than anyone's. And one thing he has in spades is pride. Battered and bruised after his third Ashes defeat, the skipper has returned to the national set-up more determined than ever and in form with the bat. Mark Waugh has tipped Punter to have a big tournament and it'd be a brave man to bet against him.

Hoodoo gurus
England have never lifted the Cup, India haven't won the tournament in 28 years and South Africa choke more than the All Blacks on the big stage. The only country that doesn't have a hoodoo to overcome in 2011 is Sri Lanka, who won the tournament last time it was on the sub-continent. For Australia to be denied another World Cup triumph this time around, some records will have to be broken.

Have you stacked your Fantasy World Cup side with Aussies - or have you avoided them like the plague? Hurry to enter your team before the first game.

FIVE REASONS WHY AUSTRALIA WON'T WIN THE 2011 WORLD CUP

Your turn
The golden rule of sub-continental cricket is to chock your side full of tweakers and spin your way to victory. Unfortunately for Australia, their already depleted spin stocks were hit hard by injury a month out from the tournament. Australia's No.1 man Jason Krejza can produce more spin than a politician, but his inexperience and high economy rate may work against him. The part-timers of David Hussey, Steve Smith and Michael Clarke will need to contribute if Australia are to be successful.

Good, but not great
Ahead of the 2003 World Cup, six of the world's top-20 ranked cricketers were Australian. In 2007, four of the top 20 wore the green and gold. Going into the 2011 tournament, Mitchell Johnson is the lone Aussie on the list. You only have to ask South Africa to know that a team of champions doesn't make a champion team. But unlike previous years, Australia don't have the likes of Gilchrist, McGrath, Hayden, Warne and Bevan to get them out of trouble.

Brittle middle
If the past six months has taught us anything, it's that Australia's batsman can collapse and collapse in a big way. Cameron White, David Hussey and Steve Smith are explosive batsman and valuable assets to the side, but Australia lacks the sturdiness of Mike Hussey and Michael Bevan they called on in 1999, 2003 and 2007. The loss of Hussey to injury could be the difference between a fourth-straight crown and an early exit.

Speed kills
What do Brett Lee, Shaun Tait and Mitchell Johnson have in common? In a word, they are all fast. Very fast. Lee and Tait have been a part of successful World Cup campaigns before, but not in the same team. In 2003, the speed of Lee was complemented by the reliability of Glenn McGrath and the accuracy of Andy Bichel. In 2007, the express pace of Tait was supported by McGrath and the subtlety of Nathan Bracken. The lack of variety in Australia's pace attack might work against them.

No fear, but loathing
There is little doubt that the second favourite team of non-Australian fans at this World Cup will be the team playing against Australia. After 12 long years, the rest of the world is waiting for the Aussies to be knocked off their perch and this is their best chance to do it. Even more worrying for Australia is that their aura has all but vanished. Three Ashes defeats and a tumble down world cricket's pecking order has given the world the belief that the great Aussies are ripe for the picking.

Greater Western Sydney coach Kevin Sheedy and his team will raid the competition as they build the Giants list for their AFL debut.

AFL Pre-Season Pain Sydney SwansGallery: Watch AFL stars sweat it out during pre-season

The Giants have 12 months before they take to the field and must find a number of experienced players to surround their classy kids.

Gold Coast Suns proved last year that nobody is off limits as they poached the game's best player, Gary Ablett, from Geelong.

AFL journalist John Clark has taken a look at the 16 established clubs - leaving the Suns off the list - to get a picture of who might call Blacktown home in 2012.

Have a read and have your say at the bottom of the story in our comments section.

Adelaide Crows
The target:
Broken Hill boy Taylor Walker has links to New South Wales and undoubted talent. He has kicked 58 goals in 32 promising games for Adelaide. The forward needs to get his goalkicking sorted but is one Sheedy is keen on.

Off limits: Patrick Dangerfield is about to turn 21 and embark on what could be one of the great Adelaide careers. Tough, talented and a must-keep for the Crows.

The word: The Crows took a hit when Gold Coast plucked Nathan Bock last year and Walker seems likely to follow to the newest franchise. If Adelaide convince him to stay then talented but staled forward Jason Porplyzia could come under consideration.

Brisbane Lions
The target: Mitch Clark
was again restless at the Lions in the summer. His desire was to get back to his native Western Australia but a big-money deal and ticket out of Brisbane could convince him to join the Giants.

Off limits: There aren't many players Michael Voss wouldn't consider off-loading outside of skipper Jonathan Brown and midfielder Daniel Rich. It's a reflection of the Brisbane plight.

The word: Queensland neighbours Gold Coast did a number on the Lions last year. Jared Brennan and Michael Rischitelli were big losses and with tough times on the horizon they are vulnerable. If Clark commits they should get through unscathed though.

Carlton
The target: Marc Murphy
was one on their wish-list but is close to re-signing with the Blues. Bryce Gibbs extended his contract for another two years midway through 2010. It leaves GWS with few choices if they are planning on pillaging Princes Park. Andrew Walker is a name thrown around at the end of most campaigns.

Off limits: Matthew Kreuzer might have a slow start to 2011 after a serious knee injury but the mobile big man is going to be a force for years in the navy blue. GWS would give plenty for him but Kreuzer is a keeeper.

The word: It's a big year for Walker, who turns 25 in May. If his body holds up and he finds some consistency the No.2 draft pick has serious value on the trade table. Hard to see any big names departing Carlton but a fringe player with experience - Bret Thornton comes to mind - could appeal to the Giants.

Dale Thomas Dale Thomas Thomas ... one of three Pies on the radar.Source: News Limited

Collingwood
The target:
Sheedy has declared war on the Magpies. He wants one of Dale Thomas, Scott Pendlebury and Dane Swan. Aiming high, is Kevin.

Off limits: Pendlebury is a star and, at 23, will be for years to come. No disrespect to ball magnet Swan but it would be harder to replace Pendlebury than it would be the tattooed one.

The word: Thomas has declared he's keen to stay in black and white and he will. Swan was shown incredible support by the Magpies in his early years and belongs at the Lexus Centre. Pendlebury might be the hardest to hang on to but Eddie McGuire will make sure it happens. The best result for the Giants will be veteran Leon Davis or a foot soldier like Alan Toovey.

Essendon
The target:
Quality key position players are difficult to develop so watch Sheedy desperately try to convince Cale Hooker or Tayte Pears to become Giants. If he can't land either of  the impressive youngsters, maybe Dustin Fletcher will be recruited in a mentor role for a season. No kidding, it's Sheeds we are talking about.

Off limits: Michael Hurley is the pick of the youngsters at Windy Hill. Last year was a tough one for the No.5 draft pick but he will only get better. When 2011 winds up he will be on the verge of superstardom.

The word: James Hird made a tongue-in-cheek claim that Sheeds had promised not to raid his former club, but it's hard to believe any club is off-limits for the new boys. Hurley must stay, Scott Gumbleton has been a big investment. Hooker and Pears are out of contract at  season's end and will be tempted by the big bucks. The Giants will likely get Jay Neagle for free at season's end.

Fremantle
The target:
The stocks of a number of Dockers rose in 2010 and now they're wanted men. NAB Rising Star winner Rhys Palmer has work to do after an injury-interrupted season but he has ball-winning ability. Versatile big man Michael Johnson looks a Kevin Sheedy type, too. Ryan Crowley is a leader who is out of contract at the end of 2011.

Off limits: Stephen Hill is a jet and the Dockers will be working feverishly to tie him to a long-term deal.

The word: Crowley, like Campbell Brown at Gold Coast, would be a wise investment for a new club. He's tough, professional and a solid citizen. They could offer him a leadership role and plenty more money. The Dockers have plenty of WA boys on their list who will be almost impossible to shift.

Geelong
The target:
Ablett one year, Jimmy Bartel the next. That's the prospect facing Geelong fans with Brownlow Medal winner Bartel on Sheedy's radar.

Off limits: Joel Selwood will be the next captain of the Cats. He's not going to be going anywhere and new coach Chris Scott will make sure of it.

The word: Bartel won't leave. Yes, they said the same about Ablett, but Jimmy grew up in Bell Park and will finish his career at Skilled Stadium. He's knocked back cash before to stay and will do the same again. The seasoned Cats will be hard to budge and a few from the fringe moved on last trade period.

Hawthorn
The target:
The Giants have an interest in Luke Hodge. Join the queue, fellas. He's now captain of the Hawks and all indications are that he'll be in brown and gold for a while to come. Perhaps a more realistic aim would be premiership midfielders Brad Sewell and Jordan Lewis.

Off limits: Hodge won't go, nor can Lance Franklin, Cyril Rioli or Jarryd Roughead. Hawthorn's best four are probably as good as any club's.

The word: Sewell was dumped by Hawthorn at one stage last year but bounced back and played solid footy to close out the season. He will be 28 to start the 2012 season while Lewis will be 25. Unlikely, yes, but it's certainly possible that a lucrative long-term contract could get one over the line.

Tom Scully Tom Scully Scully ... the Ablett case of 2011.Source: News Limited

Melbourne Demons
The target:
In case you haven't heard, they're into No.1 draft pick Tom Scully. The money being suggested - up to $800,000 per year over six years - is obscene for a lad with 21 games to his name. But the Giants want one of the best teenagers in the land and are confident of their chances. Cale Morton has plenty of admirers, is 21 and out of contract at the end of 2011.

Off limits: Jack Grimes, according to those in the know, is a future captain of the club he supported as a youngster. He heads a list of developing players that the Demons won't want to let out of their grasp.

The word: Scully and his teammates will be forced to deal with the 'will he or won't he?' until a contract is penned with the Demons or Giants. Like Ablett and the Suns before him, the longer it goes the more likely it becomes that he's on his way out. Morton will get a call if Scully knocks them back.

North Melbourne
The target: Levi Greenwood
's name has popped up. If there's no substance, his is a peculiar name to pluck and link with the GWS.

Off limits: Jack Ziebell, Ryan Bastinac and Ben Cunnington are the untouchables of the Kangaroos' eye-catching youngsters. Lachlan Hansen has 50 matches to his name and should be on the verge of his best football.

The word: Greenwood sounds as if he's closer than most to make the move but North's improving list has plenty of targets for the Giants. If they can fend off the GWS advances, that's a big vote of confidence from the players in Brad Scott's vision.

Port Adelaide
The target: Daniel Motlop
has been mentioned, and Sheedy loves a challenge, while the Westhoff boys - Justin and Matthew - could be realistic options. Both are out of contract at the conclusion of 2011.

Off limits: Very few on the Power list would be certain of keeping their place long term. Travis Boak was a priority signing midway through 2010 and after fending off the Suns, they won't have to worry about the Giants.

The word: There is no Bartel or Scully here but a Power player will join GWS. The Mark Williams connection, large contract and expectant tough times ahead at Alberton could result in a Westhoff, Motlop or Alipate Carlile packing their bags.

Richmond
The target:
It was Dustin Martin, while Trent Cotchin would have been thrown up, but both are happy at Punt Road. Mitch Morton or one of the talls - particularly Jayden Post or Alex Rance - would be more realistic.

Off limits: The desperation with which the Tigers extended Martin's deal showed how much they love him. Cotchin, Brett Deledio and Jack Riewoldt are in the same category.

The word: The developing Tigers will keep their best players but a developing key position player will jump at the chance to play every week. Who that is will depend on how 2011 pans out.

St Kilda
The target:
You wonder where Sam Gilbert's head is at after a tough summer. A difficult period brought on by himself, mind you. The 24-year-old is young enough to have his best footy ahead of him. Saints veteran Lenny Hayes is a Sydney boy and could give the fresh-faced Giants some leadership. He wants to coach at the end of his career and it could be the perfect stepping stone.

Off limits: Brendon Goddard has moved into the best half a dozen players in the competition. Under no circumstances should he, or will he, depart.

The word: A lot depends on how fractured the relationship is between Gilbert and skipper Nick Riewoldt. Does the running defender feel ostracised for his role in the nude photo scandal? We will know more by year's end but the Giants should have been in discussions with his manager as the storm raged.

Adam Goodes Adam Goodes Goodes ... would be a massive coup for GWS.Source: News Limited

Sydney Swans
The target:
Twelve months ago Adam Goodes was in the crosshairs of the city's second club. The Sydney skipper will be 32 when GWS enter the competition but would be one familiar face to the local fans. Jesse White has talent but is yet to get it all together, there would be interest.

Off limits: Daniel Hannebery is one of the finest young talents in the competition. He is also a quality individual who prepares better than just about every teenager who plays the game.

The word: This will be the first fierce battle between the Swans and their local rivals. Sydney will do everything in their power to prevent a player switching sides and will succeed.

West Coast
The target: Beau Waters
- the tough as nails defender and Eagles vice-captain - is set to have his loyalty tested. The Giants want the hard man to look after their babies and have the cash to convince him.

Off limits: Nic Naitainui is a walking billboard for the Eagles. Everywhere he goes in the west, he is recognised. That's the sort of player the Giants would kill - or at least raid the NRL - for. Sheedy loves him and the war chest will be emptied.

The Word: If Waters doesn't go - gut feeling says he will - there are few handy types left for the Giants to raid. Naitanui is a local lad who'll find it hard to pack up and leave Perth.

Western Bulldogs
The target:
Don't laugh, but GWS chief executive Dale Holmes has put 34-year-old forward Barry Hall on the list. Shaun Higgins is 12 years Hall's junior but would be a damaging forward. The up-and-down Josh Hill has also been linked.

Off limits: Jarrad Grant isn't the best player on the Bulldogs' list right now, but 21-year-old key forwards don't grow on trees.

The word: Forget about Barry playing for a fourth club, he's been thrown a lifeline by Rodney Eade and if the full forward goes on in 2012 it will be in red, white and blue. If they're keen on Hill they will get him.
